This essay deals with the first steps of young Marx’s education in the milieu of Trier at the time of the German Vormärz. The first part focuses on Marx’s father and on his teachers at the Gymnasium, underlining their Enlightenment background and political commitment on the liberal side. The second analyses Marx’s 1835 Abituraufsatz, pointing out its Enlightenment elements and the possible influence of the Kantian teaching of the Gymnasium principal, dr. Wyttenbach.
