Abstract:
Maternal parenting stress and post-traumatic symptoms in children exposed to marital conflict: A mediational model. In literature, the post-traumatic effects of domestic violence on children are well known, while the exploration of parenting stress as an explicative mechanism of these associations is a new direction of research. By considering this new direction of research, and the indications of the Cognitive Contextual Framework, the present study was carried out on 75 normative families. It was aimed to: 1) analyze the associations between inter-parental conflict, post-traumatic symptomatology and maternal parenting stress; 2) evaluate the effects of the specific dimensions of maternal parenting stress (parental distress, dysfunctional parent-child interaction and difficult child) on the children's post-traumatic symptoms; and 3) explore whether the subjective appraisals of perceived threat and self-blame mediated these associations. Results showed that predictive effects of dysfunctional parent-child interaction on the post-traumatic and dissociative symptoms, anxiety and depression, through the mediation of perceived threat, and the predictive effects of parental distress on anger symptoms, through the mediation of self-blame.
