Objectives
The Master’s Degree Programme in Civil Engineering aims to develop advanced professional profiles able to independently conceive, design, and deliver highly complex structures, infrastructures, and research and development activities. The Programme aims to provide students with advanced knowledge in the core areas of Civil Engineering, equipping them with the ability to model and solve complex engineering problems at a level of depth beyond that attainable through the knowledge acquired in Bachelor’s Degree programmes. This advanced level of expertise will allow graduates to exercise a high degree of autonomy in decision-making and to develop full awareness of their professional responsibilities. The Programme therefore aims to achieve the following specific educational objectives. 1. To provide students with broad specialised knowledge in the field of structural and infrastructure safety through courses focused on the advanced design of: geotechnical works; civil engineering structures, including highly complex structures and those located in seismic areas, as well as foundation structures; seismic improvement and retrofitting interventions, consolidation and strengthening of existing building structures, also through innovative techniques and materials; transport systems and infrastructures; and hydraulic structures for flood protection and for the utilisation and management of water resources. 2. To equip students with the ability to address interdisciplinary problems in the fields described above, with particular focus on current challenges such as the conservation of architectural and monumental heritage, requiring in-depth knowledge of structural mechanics, restoration theory, seismic engineering, and traditional and innovative materials technologies. 3. To provide students with a thorough understanding of the complex regulatory framework governing civil engineering works, together with the ability to interpret the physical phenomena underlying regulatory requirements, enabling them to follow and understand future developments in the regulatory framework. 4. To equip students with the ability to use computational tools for the computer-aided design of structures and infrastructures, and with the knowledge of physical phenomena required to apply rapid assessment methods and critically evaluate the results obtained. 5. To equip students with the necessary skills to communicate effectively, develop projects, and understand technical texts, including those written in English. At the end of the educational programme described above, students’ training is further complemented by an internship, which may be carried out at design firms, construction companies, or public institutions, and by a demanding thesis project. During the thesis work, the Master’s student, under the supervision of a faculty member, develops a project or carries out a study involving analytical or numerical modelling, experimental activities, or the interpretation of experimental results. These activities are specifically aimed at consolidating the competences acquired by encouraging students to critically rework and apply the knowledge they have gained.
Applying knowledge and understanding
Graduates of the Master’s Degree Programme acquire in-depth competences in hydraulics, geotechnical engineering, structural mechanics, materials technology, transport systems, and English language skills, which are essential for leading and coordinating the design and implementation of complex civil engineering works and infrastructures, including in international settings. These competences, combined with a thorough understanding of the regulatory framework, enable graduates to develop structural, architectural, structural strengthening, and road infrastructure design projects, also in international professional contexts. These activities will be performed while fully respecting safety and functional requirements and ensuring environmental protection, thanks to the competences developed through the related and complementary learning activities included in the programme.

Degree awarded
Upon completion of the study programme, the student is awarded a Master Degree in Civil Engineering. This qualification belongs to the second cycle of higher education, is legally valid, and entitles the holder to use the academic title of Master Graduate (‘Dottore’) and the opportunity to take the state exam for admission into the A register of engineers.
