Capturing Emotions: Revealing the Potential of Volumetric Video Technology

Chapter
Publication Date:
2026
abstract:
Volumetric video (VV) technology is an innovative method of visual media that converts real-time video into three-dimensional models. The objective of this work is to explore, from a theoretical perspective, the practicality of using VV in emotions’ investigation. This advanced technology provides an immersive experience that could enable researchers and clinicians to investigate emotional responses in a more nuanced and realistic manner. By immersing individuals in lifelike environments, Volumetric Videos facilitate the accurate examination of emotional states and reactions. This immersive quality is crucial for observing subtle emotional cues and behaviors that traditional two-dimensional videos might miss. Volumetric Videos could present new opportunities for the mental health sector, by enhancing assessment’s accuracy. By providing a detailed and dynamic view of an individual’s interactions within a virtual environment, clinicians can gain deeper insights into emotional triggers and patterns. This can lead to more precise and personalized treatment plans, improving outcomes for patients with a variety of emotional and psychological disorders. Volumetric Videos allow for the creation of tailored scenarios that simulate real-world environments, helping individuals to engage in therapeutic exercises that closely mimic their daily experiences. The integration of VV technology into psychological practice represents a significant advancement in the fields of emotion research and clinical therapy. By providing more effective and personalized care, Volumetric Videos hold the promise of transforming the way we approach emotional well-being and mental health treatment.
