Inter-MAC: Convergence at MAC layer in Home Gigabit Network

Conference Paper
Publication Date:
2008
abstract:
The purpose of the present work is to introduce a disruptive approach to the concept of convergence, allowing different technologies to communicate at MAC level by adopting an innovative solution, located between the network protocol and the technology dependent MAC layer: the Inter-MAC layer. Inter-MAC guarantees better scalability, performances and simplicity, compared to solutions based on middleware, in a scenario focused on Home Gigabit Network where multiple services (HDTV, P2P, VoIP, Gaming, Home Automation,???) and Gigabit telecommunication technologies (Power line, WiFi, UWB, 60 Ghz, Hybrid wireless optics) are considered. This paper describes the main converged functionalities provided by the Inter-MAC layer, such as QoS Control, Path Selection and Technology Handover. These features have been designed taking into account the requirements coming from the upper layers along with the characteristics of the various technology dependent MAC layers given in the scenario.
