Abstract:
The essay analyzes Sally Rooney’s Conversations with Friends (2017) and Normal People (2018) in light of the cultural transformations of post-millennial literature. Through an approach that integrates cognitive narratology and studies on subjectivity, it investigates the construction of identity in both novels. Interpersonal relationships, the codes of digital communication, and the structures of economic and affective power shape non-linear and dialogic paths of development within a context marked by precarity and hyperconnectivity. Rooney blends the Bildungsroman tradition with elements of the romantic novel, offering a portrayal of the self as a relational process, constantly negotiated between self-determination and external influences.
