abstract:
This article retraces the overall and compositional process which, starting from the unpublished
novel Frine, led Verga to the final writing of Eva. Through a detailed investigation into autograph
documents, it is possible to improve the knowledge of the young author’s correction habits
(who would also consider suggestions given by friends reading Frine), and to precisely date both
some editorial phases of the preface in Eva, and some stylistic features regarding the narrative
strategies employed in the finally published novel.
