Dio nei margini. Religione, potere e devozione nei Presìdi di Toscana e sull'isola d'Elba (XVIII-XIX secolo)

Chapter
Publication Date:
2025
abstract:
In peripheral and marginal contexts, such as the Presìdi of Tuscany and the island of Elba between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the distinction between public and private religiosity tends to become porous. Through the examination of ecclesiastical organization, devotional practices, confraternities, collective rites, and forms of sacralization of power, the sacred emerges as a language of belonging, legitimation, and community cohesion. On the island of Elba in particular, during the Napoleonic period, religious worship and political memory overlapped to the point of producing new forms of secular devotion.
