The Latin Hermes in Translation. Asclepius, Glosses on Trismegistus, Book of 6 Principles of Things, Book of 24 Philosophers

Edited Book
Publication Date:
2026
abstract:
Over the last two-thousand years, the legendary ancient Egyptian sage Hermes Trismegistus has had dozens of works, practical and theoretical, pseudepigraphically attributed to him in multiple different languages. This volume presents a collection of works drawn in particular from the Latin philosophical tradition, here translated into modern English. This includes the Asclepius, the Glosses on Trismegistus, the Book of Six Principles of Things, and the Book of 24 Philosophers, each of which had an important role in the intellectual life of the medieval Latin west. Prefaced by introductions and accompanied by copious notes, these translations serve to make a set of frequently overlooked works more accessible to students and scholars alike. All translations are based on the most recent critical editions published in the Hermes Latinus sub-series of the Corpus Christianorum. Continuatio Mediaevalis (vol. 142; vol. 143; and vol. 143A) and in Textes et Études du Moyen Âge (volume 41).
