Study Program And Objectives
Objectives
The educational objective of the Degree Programme is to provide Master's degree graduates with specialised knowledge and skills in the field of preventive and adapted physical activities, with particular emphasis on health promotion, the maintenance of physical well-being, and the planning and delivery of physical activity programmes in upper secondary schools. In particular, the Degree Programme is structured into three curricula. The first curriculum, “Wellness and Fitness”, focuses on the acquisition of theoretical, methodological, and technical-practical knowledge in the design, management, and delivery of physical activity programmes aimed at achieving, recovering, and maintaining physical fitness. These programmes are adapted to different age groups, genders, individual motor abilities and skills, as well as to the presence of stable chronic conditions affecting different organs and systems. Furthermore, students will acquire knowledge and skills related to the main instrumental techniques for the assessment of anthropometric parameters and body composition, as well as for the evaluation of physical fitness in relation to age, gender, individual motor abilities, and the presence of stable chronic conditions. The programme also includes the acquisition of psycho-social and pedagogical tools aimed at understanding and promoting psychological well-being, motivational factors, and the quality of interaction with individuals and groups. The second curriculum, “Physical Activity in Secondary Schools”, focuses on the acquisition of theoretical, methodological, and technical-practical knowledge aimed at the planning, management, and delivery of physical activity programmes within the curricular teaching of Physical Education in lower and upper secondary schools. Furthermore, students will acquire knowledge of approaches to inclusive education and special educational needs. The third curriculum, “Biomechanics”, focuses on the acquisition of theoretical, methodological, and technical-practical knowledge aimed at the use of orthotic supports and devices, as well as the analysis of the data obtained from them, for the prevention and improvement of individuals’ motor functionality, the enhancement of sports performance, and the assessment of the overall and sector-specific ergonomic and functional demands of the locomotor system. Furthermore, within this curriculum, students will explore in greater depth topics related to musculoskeletal disorders, neuromuscular conditions, biomechanical and ergonomic issues associated with congenital disabilities, as well as the design and implementation of specific motor rehabilitation and re-education programmes. For all three curricula, these objectives are achieved through the activation of courses in the fields of exercise sciences, biomedical sciences, and psycho-pedagogical and sociological disciplines. The programme is structured over two years: in addition to the theoretical component delivered online (through instructional and interactive teaching activities), the Degree Programme includes practical training activities carried out in person and in virtual classrooms, as well as internship activities to be undertaken in suitable facilities operating in the field of preventive and adapted physical activities and physical well-being.
Applying knowledge and understanding
Through the specific educational activities provided for in the study programme regulations, graduates will acquire advanced knowledge of the psychological and sociological aspects related to well-being, the functional changes and adaptations resulting from physical exercise, methods for assessing physical fitness status and exercise programming, as well as educational methodologies and techniques. In particular, the acquisition of knowledge and understanding is supported through instructional and interactive teaching tools, integrated by the continuous interaction of students with reference lecturers and academic tutors in virtual classrooms. The assessment of students’ knowledge and understanding of the topics covered is carried out through ongoing assessments within interactive teaching activities and final written and/or oral examinations.
Applying knowledge and understanding
Through the specific educational activities, graduates will acquire the ability to apply their knowledge in order to design and implement physical activity programmes aimed at achieving, restoring, and maintaining optimal conditions of psychophysical well-being for individuals of different age groups and with different physical conditions. In particular, the acquisition of the ability to apply the knowledge gained is supported through instructional and interactive teaching tools and internship activities, integrated by the continuous interaction of students with reference lecturers and academic tutors in virtual classrooms. The assessment of students’ knowledge and understanding of the topics covered is carried out through ongoing assessments within interactive teaching activities and final written and/or oral examinations.
Autonomy of judgements
Upon completion of their studies, graduates will be able to independently select the information necessary to assess an individual’s initial physical condition in order to develop an integrated and personalised physical activity programme tailored to the individual’s characteristics (age, gender, and health status). Graduates are able to independently consult scientific literature to justify the adoption of a specific physical activity programme, assessing the potential risks associated with the relevant training protocol and the suitability and safety of the facilities and equipment. In particular, the development and assessment of students’ autonomy of judgement are enhanced through critical re-elaboration, integration, and analysis activities proposed as part of interactive teaching, as well as through internship activities and the preparation of the final thesis, supported by the continuous interaction of students with reference lecturers and academic tutors in virtual classrooms.
Communication skills
Upon completion of their studies, graduates will be able to clearly and unambiguously communicate and explain the aims and characteristics of existing or self-designed adapted physical activity and sports protocols. Furthermore, they will be able to adapt their language according to their interlocutors, appropriately using technical and scientific terminology when interacting with other members of interdisciplinary working groups, and a simpler, more accessible language when communicating with users and their social reference groups. Graduates will possess the communication skills necessary to motivate, engage, and reassure users in carrying out a specific training protocol. In particular, the development and assessment of communication skills are enhanced through interactive teaching tools, internship activities, and the preparation of the final thesis, supported by the continuous interaction of students with reference lecturers and academic tutors in virtual classrooms.
Learning skills
Master’s graduates will acquire the cultural tools necessary to independently access knowledge and skills for continuous technical and scientific updating, developing critical thinking, as well as interest and motivation to participate in innovation and research activities. In particular, the development and assessment of learning skills are enhanced through differentiated channels depending on whether the learning relates to theoretical knowledge or practical and operational skills. In the former case, study skills seminars are organised alongside interactive teaching activities. The acquisition of procedures and techniques is enhanced and assessed through in-person seminars, workshops in virtual classrooms, and internships.
Access to further studies
Access to third cycle studies in QF-EHEA / 8° livello EQF
Degree awarded
Upon completion of the study programme, the student is awarded a Master's Degree in Physical Exercise Sciences for Well-being and Healthiness. The qualification belongs to the second cycle of higher education, has legal recognition in Italy and entitles the holder to the title of "Dottore Magistrale".
