Abstract:
In 1737, after the War of the Polish Succession, the Presìdi of Tuscany
were assigned to the new Kingdom of Naples. King Charles of Bourbon had
to face several problems, deciding how to manage a distant and quite particular
space. The Presìdi, in fact, were not a colony, but a sui generis territory,
regulated until then by medieval statutes and substantially self-managed. The
King’s choice was to normalise the territory administration by carrying out a
reform path aimed at a substantial centralisation. For the Presìdi, this meant
the end of their particularity and their final suppression in 1796.
