Abstract:
In this contribution, I frame and develop an epistemological reflection on the notion of ‘citizenship at multiple levels’ – which characterises an innovative pedagogical approach to citizenship education in Europe – drawing on French cultural and literary history. In particular, I discuss a new definition of the semantic field associated with the word ‘citizen’, tracing its etymological trajectory and its essential transformations during the Age of Enlightenment. I conclude by outlining the new research questions that may arise from the conjunction with the plural and anti-hierarchical notion of mathematical scale.
