Study Program And Objectives

Objectives

The specific aim of the programme is to provide graduates with the appropriate knowledge and skills to carry out professional activities in economic and business contexts, in both the private and public sectors. The Degree Programme in Economics enables students, first and foremost, to acquire an appropriate basic knowledge of the main tools applicable to business economics issues,
as well as of the principal methodologies for calculation, accounting, and the analysis of economic and business data. In addition, the programme provides specific and interdisciplinary technical skills, enabling graduates to enter the labour market and to adapt independently to its dynamics.
The study programme, structured into different curricula, is organised over three years. The courses in the first two years, which are generally common to all curricula, are designed to provide basic knowledge in the main areas of learning, namely economics, business administration, law, and mathematics and statistics. Students will also develop their written and oral English language skills and undertake additional learning activities pursuant to Article 10(5)(d) of Ministerial Decree 270/2004. To these activities are added more specialised and professionally oriented courses, mainly concentrated in the third year, which vary according to the curriculum chosen by the student at the time of enrolment.

The basic topics covered in the first year of the programme provide fundamental knowledge of market mechanisms, microeconomic and macroeconomic variables, mathematical and statistical tools, and the main factors influencing and characterising the business system and the economic system in which enterprises operate. The courses in the second year of the programme
further develop topics in business, economics, law, and mathematics, mainly through core disciplinary subjects. The third year of the programme consists of courses addressing economic, business, and legal issues in greater depth and specificity, in line with the chosen curriculum, and providing skills applicable in the labour market while bringing graduates closer to professional practice. The educational offer is completed by a range of elective courses chosen by the student.

The overall educational objective of the three-year Degree Programme in Economics is therefore to enable graduates to acquire in-depth knowledge of economic and business theories, economic history, and the dynamics of an increasingly globalised market.

The programme is structured into curricula offering a choice between a predominantly economics and business-oriented track, a ‘psycho-economic’ track focused on the relationship between economics and psychology, a banking-oriented track, and a track devoted to the study of start-up enterprises.
The economics and business curriculum is designed to further develop competencies in law and business administration and to strengthen graduates’ preparation for careers in consultancy, accounting, and business economics.
The ‘psycho-economic’ curriculum is designed to provide knowledge and skills concerning the psychological factors that influence individual and group behaviour, also in a working environment.
The banking and finance curriculum is designed to integrate fundamental knowledge in economics, business, law, and mathematics and statistics with specific competencies in the management of financial activities.
The start-up curriculum is designed to prepare graduates in specific topics related to the start-up phase, including the establishment and management of start-up enterprises from both a managerial and legal perspective throughout the entire process. It also provides advanced training in tools for business planning and management applied to start-up companies.

A solid command of scientific methods and content, together with the economic and business competencies provided by the programme across the various disciplinary fields of Economics, will enable graduates both to enter the labour market directly and to continue their studies, further enhancing their preparation through the attainment of a Master’s degree or a first-level Master’s programme.

Applying knowledge and understanding

ECONOMICS AREA: The learning objectives of the economics area focus on the acquisition of methods and knowledge concerning present and future economic phenomena, enabling students to develop and/or apply original ideas, also with attention to the historical analysis of events and the international dimension. Graduates in Economics will acquire a solid grounding in economic disciplines, including knowledge of microeconomics and macroeconomics, with particular reference to the tools and mechanisms underlying economic phenomena. They will be able to understand historical-economic reasoning and the relationship between economic and historical phenomena,
and will possess an adequate knowledge of the fundamental principles of public finance.
BUSINESS AREA: The purpose of the educational activities in the area of business administration is to provide basic knowledge of business economics, including organisation, management, and accounting and reporting processes. Within this framework, students will also acquire integrated knowledge of management control, market positioning activities, and the overall development of the business. Graduates in Economics will acquire a solid preparation in business disciplines and an adequate knowledge of accounting principles. They will also gain knowledge of financial intermediation tools and processes and capital markets, as well as organisational culture in workplace contexts. Depending on the chosen curriculum, it is also possible to further develop skills in financial statement analysis, typical of professionals working in the private sector, as well as knowledge of marketing, start-up management, and financial risk management.
LAW AREA: In the legal field, the learning objectives relate to the knowledge and understanding of legal rules governing social life and economic phenomena. Graduates in Economics will be able to understand and use legal language and legal methodology; they will acquire adequate knowledge of the principles and institutions of the legal system, of individual rights and duties with particular reference to the economic sphere, and of the legal framework governing private economic initiative in the form of entrepreneurial activity.
MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS AREA: The acquisition of mathematical and statistical methods for the analysis of economic and business phenomena is a key learning objective of the programme, as it provides the essential tools for a thorough understanding of business dynamics and for the appropriate design of economic and managerial interventions.
SOCIO-PSYCHOLOGICAL AREA: The study of selected sociological and psychological disciplines is included to complement economic knowledge,
in order to understand the dynamics underlying communication and information management in social contexts.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS: Further learning objectives include the knowledge and understanding of the English language, basic knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of information technology, and basic skills for handling job interviews.

Applying knowledge and understanding

ECONOMICS AREA: Economic knowledge allows for a critical interpretation of reality and supports analytical work that can be applied in both the public and private sectors. Graduates in Economics will have developed the ability to analyse and assess microeconomic and macroeconomic issues in order to interpret both current and historical economic phenomena, with particular attention to market dynamics.
They will be able to contextualise and critically analyse historical events, critically understand theoretical models in the scientific literature, and independently pursue further study in economic disciplines where appropriate.

Autonomy of judgements

The Degree Programme in Economics equips graduates with the tools required to develop an appropriate critical understanding of the complexity of the system in which they will operate.
The skills and competencies acquired enable graduates to independently select the most appropriate methods and techniques to identify optimal solutions to economic and business problems, or to undertake development, in-depth study, and research activities in the fields of Economics. Graduates in Economics will be able to collect and interpret data, understand phenomena, and form independent judgments, including on interdisciplinary issues in economics, business, law, mathematics and statistics, and the social sciences. The courses in the study programme, also through individual and group exercises, help students develop the ability to select, process, and interpret data, facts, and circumstances in order to form their own independent assessments of the various situations and problems analysed. One of the aims of the Degree Programme in Economics is to foster the ability to identify and select relevant information relating to the issues to be addressed, to evaluate it independently, and to communicate well-founded judgments. Students develop these abilities through the critical analysis of the texts assigned for study, practical exercises, discussions held during virtual classroom sessions, and the preparation of written assignments, including those supervised by the dissertation supervisor for the final dissertation.
The acquisition of independent judgement is assessed through the discussion of the more complex aspects of each subject during oral examinations, through written assignments and exercises, and through the preparation of the final dissertation.

Communication skills

The design of the Degree Programme enables students to acquire communication skills that allow graduates to communicate ideas, knowledge, and techniques effectively, both in written and oral form, to a range of audiences. Regardless of their individual communication skills, graduates in Economics will be able to communicate effectively
with the wide range of stakeholders they encounter in their professional activities, including specialists from other disciplines. These communication skills are developed through oral examinations, written assignments and exercises involving open-ended questions, as well as through virtual classroom sessions, where students interact with the lecturer and their peers by discussing and exchanging views on the topics addressed. The final dissertation provides students with a further opportunity to develop their communication skills, together with their abilities in analysing, processing, and presenting their work, through the preparation of a written dissertation based on one or more subject areas studied during the programme.

Learning skills

The educational design of the Degree Programme is intended to enable students to develop appropriate learning skills, analytical reasoning, and the ability to explore in depth the subjects covered during the programme. Graduates in Economics will have acquired a method of study that is not merely mechanical or based on memorisation, but rather analytical, conceptual, and critical. This will enable them to develop concepts, formulate independent judgments, and evaluate and verify the information they have acquired. They will also be able to develop autonomous approaches to knowledge management, which will be valuable both in their professional careers and in pursuing further studies at a higher level.
Graduates will possess the tools and competencies required to pursue further studies with full academic maturity and complete independence while carrying out their professional activities. They will also be able to identify and retrieve the information necessary to broaden their knowledge base and to maintain a level of professional development appropriate to their responsibilities. Learning skills are fostered primarily by providing students with a solid methodological foundation that encourages the development of critical thinking grounded in the scientific method. This approach promotes sustained concentration and facilitates the assimilation of concepts, both those presented explicitly, such as definitions, principles, and rules, and those derived implicitly through reasoning and insight. Students are therefore continuously encouraged to undertake independent study, which helps them to assess and, where appropriate, improve their learning skills.

Degree awarded

Upon completion of the study programme, the student is awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. This qualification belongs to the first cycle of higher education, is legally valid, and entitles the holder to use the academic title of Graduate (‘Dottore’)
